More Than Gifts primarily offers diaper/nappy cakes or useful things or gifts for a baby packaged into cute, attractive, non-edible cakes. A diaper cake makes a great centerpiece or gift for baby showers, baptisms, and birthdays for kids aged 1-2 years old. Clients have a choice of buying the items for the diaper cakes themselves or they can also let More Than Gifts take care of getting hold of the baby items to be packaged into a diaper cake.

More Than Gifts also does themed cakes and packaging for adults. They likewise offer useful and memorable give aways and souvenir items (e.g. cosmetic kits, face towels, paper products) for baptisms, birthdays, and weddings.

The Market:

Each diaper cake has a distinct personality and character, making it a joy to give and receive. For the diaper cakes, More Than Gifts mainly focuses on the 20-35 year old age bracket. Women in this age group are usually newly weds, expectant moms, new moms, and those who are planning to get married. Their friends will usually be having weddings, baby showers, and baptisms and these occasions are perfect events to showcase a diaper cake.

Convenience for the client, in terms of delivery of products, and ease of communication for coordination purposes while an order is in process, are also of primary importance.

The Practical Stuff

More Than Gifts requires 2-3 days’ lead time for a standard order. For a highly personalized gift, they would need a week’s notice.

Prices of gift items and/or cakes range from P600 to P3,500. The price depends on the items to be included in the diaper cake, for example, and a client’s detailed specifications. Clients may give More Than Gifts their own design ideas for More Than Gifts to execute or they can also choose to entrust the diaper cake design to the group.

For packaging orders only, prices range from P800 to P1000, depending on how complicated the design is.

More Than Gifts likewise offers several package options to clients, with specific items included in the diaper cake, with prices ranging from P1,000 to P1,500. You may contact Honey Romero or Bernice Olives for details on these but some of the included items would be: bibs, milk bottles, disposable diapers, among others.

More Than Gifts charges a delivery fee of P100 for orders which do not reach the minimum amount of P1,200. Customers may likewise pick up their orders at designated places in the following areas:

Quezon City: Loyola Grand Villas (near Katipunan and La Vista)

Makati City: LPL Manor, 116 Leviste St.

South: Pilar Village in Las Pinas

Once an order has been placed, payment is done upon delivery. In cases wherein the client would like to have the gift delivered to the recipient, the client will have to make a payment via deposit to More Than Gifts’ bank account.

How More Than Gifts Started:

The business started in October 2005. The ladies behind More Than Gifts, namely, Bernice Olives and Honey Romero, first did a diaper cake for an officemate’s baby shower. Officemates, friends, and relatives liked what they saw and started asking the two to come up with gifts which were not traditional and out of the ordinary. Orders started to come in via word of mouth and referrals, as well as via the internet. Both ladies have a day job which is totally different from their hobby cum business.

Some Gift Giving Tips:

Everyone gives gifts at some point during their life. Here are some points to remember:

1.	Add a unique character or “stamp” to a gift to make it more memorable.

2.	Be creative. The best gifts are not always the most expensive.

3.	Give gifts that are both attractive and useful.

Are you a foreigner visiting or living in the Philippines? Or are you a Filipino wanting to learn more about what it means to be Pinoy? Here are some simple ways for you to gain more insights into the interesting creature that is called the Filipino:

1.	Travel around the Philippines: Go out and see the country. Visit the churches, museums, other places of interest, and the markets. This way, you will learn about Philippine history, will meet the people, and learn about the food and how a typical day in a certain place goes.

2.	Observe during holidays and special times: Christmas, Holy Week, elections, weddings, and wakes – these times will allow you a better peek into the Filipino’s practices, values, and interests.

3.	Take public transportation: Ride a jeepney, take the bus or the LRT and the MRT. Talk to the taxi driver. You are sure to hear his views about life, traffic, and politics. Observe the other drivers, as well as the pedestrians and traffic enforcers, on the road.

4.	Watch Philippine movies: Indie films will probably give you better quality films these days. It is okay though to also watch Enteng Kabisote during the Metro Manila FilmFest to see what most of the Pinoys are watching.

5.	Read Philippine writers or authors in English and Filipino: Visit the Filipiniana section in major bookstores.

6.	Learn the language: This will allow you to communicate and keep in touch with more people.

7.	Listen to Filipino music and artists: You will notice that the songs that become very popular are either very sad or dramatic; tell a good story; or provide some novelty. If you wish to hear music that speaks of what is good in Philippine culture, you may with to invite the indigenous Filipino rock band BAILAN to perform for you.

“The world speaks to me in colors, my soul answers in music.” – Rabindranath Tagore

Appreciating or listening to music is one of the ways by which we can learn about a certain culture. BAILAN is a Filipino indigenous rock music band that provides original music inspired by Filipino and other cultures’ indigenous sounds blended with a contemporary rock feel.

About BAILAN:

BAILAN provides musical performances that speak of what is good in Filipino culture. BAILAN hopes to communicate the beauty and strength of the Filipino race to individuals in search of good music focusing on Philippine culture.

BAILAN is another word for babaylan which is defined by the U.P. dictionary as: “Sa sinaunang lipunan, tao na may tungkuling magsagawa ng mga ritwal lalo na yaong pang-alay.” (Rough translation: “In early society, a person who has the responsibility of performing rituals, particularly those related to offerings.)

BAILAN is thus all about looking back to our roots, where we came from: our practices, beliefs, and values through their offerings of song.

The band started on August 10, 2006. At a time characterized by economic challenges, the continuous migration of Filipinos to other countries, and a seeming difficulty among younger people to appreciate what is Filipino or even speak the Filipino language, BAILAN seeks to create music that will imbue Filipinos with pride in their country, the Philippines.

In the past months, BAILAN has performed in schools (e.g. University of the Philippines’ Asian Center, Philippine Normal University) and upon the request of various NGOs like GZO, Community Volunteers Missioners based in the Cordillera, Peacemakers’ Circle, CCAG, and Ugat Pilipino.

BAILAN’s Songs:

To date, BAILAN already has 13 original musical pieces.

Following are the sample lyrics (in Filipino, the national language of the Philippines) of some of their songs to give you a flavor of the kind of musical performances that they do. These are included here with the permission of BAILAN. Please get in touch with them if you would like to make use of the lyrics too.

NAGHIHINTAY (Waiting)

Naghihintay, naghihintay
Dito sa parang
Hinihintay, hinihintay
Dalawin ng antok.

Hinihintay, hinihintay
Urong na gising
Upang makalipad
Sa tugatog ng bundok.

Ref.
Dahil sa dako pa roon.
Mayroong dadalawing ninuno at poon.
Hahandugan ng atang
Upang mahilom ang sakit at karamdaman.

Nawa’y maging sapat
Ang aming alay
Upang mabalik na
Sa hustong malay

O, Umboh, kami ay kaawaan
Upang mabalik na
Sa ‘yong kaharian
Ni Tuhan
Na kataas-taasan,
Na karangal-rangalan,
Na puspos ng kabaitan.

Naghihintay dalawin ng antok.(3x)

BAHAGHARI (Rainbow)

Sakay ako sa bahaghari
Nang kita’y masilayan
Anong kulay nga pala
Ng ulap mo noon.

Dili ba’t asul at luntian
Tulad ng bulaklak at halaman
Dili ba’t pula at dilaw
Tulad ng paru-parong magalaw.

Ref.
Sa dami ng kulay, Sinta
Sa liwanag kita nakikita
Dili ba’t ikaw ang pag-asa
Sa ngalan ng Lumikha.

Ulan man ay nawawari
Hangin ay namumutawi
Sa pagdatal ng ‘yong pag-ibig
Sa makulay na bahaghari.

LUHA NG LANGIT (Tears of Heaven)

Luha ng langit
Ang siya ring didilig
Sa tigang na lupa
Ng sandaigidig.
Tulad ng pighati’t
Mga kirot ng pagsubok
Yayabong ang butil
Kung tanggapin ang alok.
Pagtanggap
Ng sakit
Sa ngalan ng
Pagbabagong-loob.

Kaya’t buksan ang puso’t
Hihilumin ito
Ng himig ng pag-ibig
Na magpapalago
Sa butil ng diwang
Sisibol sa panahong
Handa na ang daigdig
Sa ‘yong pagyabong.

DALAWANG URI NG KAUNLARAN (Two Kinds of Progress)

Naandito sa hangganan
Tinatanaw ang kabundukan
Sinasaway ang pagitan
Dalawang uri ng kaunlaran.

Puno ba at halaman
O mga bakal at batong kaharian
Buhay ang sigaw sa pagitan
Alin nga ba ang tamang paraan?

Ref.
Lulunurin tayo kung di natin matandaan
Mga aral ng ninuno.
Mabubura ang katotohanan.

He started his business 3 years ago. He was inspired to make his own drums after he met a musician who had an African djembe. He then researched on materials that he could use to make his own drums. In the process of doing his research, he came across interesting things about Filipino culture like: beadwork, our native instruments, our history, and rituals. He now makes drums with features similar to an African drum, but with a Filipino touch.

Musicians typically have a need for his services of restoration, tuning, and reskin of old drums which he states music stores do not typically offer. For accessories, on the other hand, big companies also usually mass produce these items so there is hardly any personal touch to the products that they offer.

Life is a series of events – from happy ones like birthdays or weddings to work-related ones like product launches or conferences. It takes a lot of time and effort to put an event together so here are some tips which may be helpful:

Have a clear objective in mind: What do you wish to accomplish with the event that you are planning? The ultimate target you have will determine a lot of things – how the program will go, the venue for the event, etc. An event to thank your top, most loyal clients, for example, will be very different from say, a product launch.

Start planning early: Events take time to plan. For major ones, 6 months to a year before may be sufficient. You may want to reserve a particular location for the event. The 6 months to one year allowance should ensure that you are able to hold the event at the place where you want it to be. You may of course decide to work on an event within a shorter time frame than 6 months. That is still possible but may entail unwanted and unnecessary stress.

Set major milestones and have a realistic timetable: List major activities or things to be done and set a deadline for each. This way, at any one time, you can tell whether you are on track or if adjustments in your planning or timetable are necessary.

Have someone on top of everything: The problem with having a team usually work on something is that sometimes, we assume wrongly, that certain tasks are being done when in fact, they aren’t being attended to. Be clear with assignments on a per individual basis. At the same time, someone must pull everything together and see the whole picture by taking the lead.

Assess and allocate your resources: Evaluate what you have in terms of people, time, and money. Put your resources to good use but make sure that you do not overburden anyone. Stick to your budget.

Serve good food: Whether we are talking about the actual event or gatherings or meetings necessary in planning the event, people involved in the project or more importantly, our guests and clients themselves, must be well-fed. People cannot work well if they are hungry. Clients will not be predisposed to make a decision in your favor if they are unhappy. I have seen it numerous times at seminars. The speaker or trainer may not do a good job but if the meal is good, participants still leave the venue happy. At the other extreme, even if the speaker is the best, if the guests get lousy food, the feedback about the event will not be that great.

Be flexible and stay cool: Do not expect everything to go your way. No event proceeds perfectly.. Not all the planning can prevent little mishaps from taking place. Just relax and go with the flow. Take comfort in the thought that you did or have done your best.

Call in the experts: You may want to have a professional events manager handle the planning of the event or even just the day of the event for you. Be realistic in your view of what you can and cannot handle. Do not be ashamed to ask for help.

If you have an event that you are planning and wish to have a team assist you with that, you may visit and consider touching base with:EventsPlus, Inc.
